Kim Myung-sik Exhibition A Home Full of Happiness

Artland Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Kim Myung-sik, one of Korea’s leading contemporary artists, titled “A Home Full of Happiness,” which will be held from April 5 to April 27, 2025. This exhibition will showcase 22 oil paintings, focusing on new works imbued with messages of multicultural coexistence and peace.

A Colorful Artistic World Depicting Multicultural Coexistence

Kim Myung-sik, born in Seoul in 1949, is a renowned contemporary artist who has been active in creating and exhibiting works in Seoul and New York. After studying at the Central University College of Arts in Seoul, Kim has continued to explore themes of multicultural harmony through his vibrant and expressive art.

Kim’s acclaimed series East Side Story emerged during his stay in New York from 2004 to 2005. The series received significant attention, leading to five invitation-only exhibitions in New York that same year. Since then, his works have been showcased in various locations, including Hong Kong and China. In 2010, he embarked on a Japanese tour titled “From Kyushu to Hokkaido,” starting at Artland Gallery in Marugame and continuing to Osaka, Kobe, Tokyo, and Sapporo.

The East Side Story series reflects deep insights into New York’s multicultural society. The inspiration came one day in 2004 when Kim saw rows of houses through a train window. The faces he had seen days earlier at a SoHo café seemed to merge with the houses in the cityscape. White houses, black houses, yellow houses—they appeared to symbolize the diversity of ethnicities. Upon arriving at his studio, Kim began fervently painting the impressions from the train ride.

New York, a city where people of diverse backgrounds live together, often witnesses conflicts and misunderstandings. The title East Side draws from “East,” symbolizing sunrise and hope, conveying a universal message of harmony and peace between East and West.

After retiring from Dong-A University in Busan in 2015, Kim moved to Yongin, near Seoul. His studio, located in a rural area within the city, is surrounded by fields and forests, offering him a tranquil environment to work. The vivid natural surroundings—lush green summers and snowy winters—have deeply influenced his recent works, which incorporate bold primary colors to depict seasonal transitions.

This exhibition marks Kim’s fifth solo show at Artland Gallery and the first in five years since 2019. Featuring 22 new oil paintings, the collection invites viewers to experience a dynamic artistic world that traverses the changing seasons.
