Akiko Mabuchi, born in Mitoyo, Kagawa Prefecture, gained attention in 2010 through the "Tokyo Wonder Wall" (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo) and the "Gunma Biennale for Young Artists 2010" (Gunma Museum of Modern Art). Since then, she has continued to participate in numerous exhibitions, including "ART OSAKA 2016" (Osaka), the "ARK Art Award 2018" (Kyoto), and "Lumieres du Printems" (France). More recently, she held a solo exhibition titled "Along with the Fluctuations of Color" at Matsuzakaya Ueno in 2023 and is scheduled to exhibit at "Blooming - The Flowering Exhibition" in Hong Kong in 2024.

Mabuchi’s works explore the sense of existence within the vastness of nature, expressing the beauty and transience found therein. She has pursued the depth of the canvas, using deep shades of blue and the spreading effects of watercolor to create softness and expansion. In recent years, she has been captivated by the color "white," representing elements like clouds, snow, and mist. Through their transparent and formless characteristics, she conveys the sensations of nature.

The upcoming "Akiko Mabuchi Exhibition" will feature predominantly new works that delve deeper into the unity with nature, showcasing many pieces centered on the theme of "white." These works, with their airiness and subtle aromas within ambiguous shapes, strongly communicate the sense of unity with nature and the ephemerality of existence. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the delicate sensations Mabuchi feels in nature, brought to life through her paintings.

Artland Gallery is delighted to present this special exhibition, offering a glimpse into Akiko Mabuchi's intricate and profound artistic world. We warmly invite all art enthusiasts to attend and immerse themselves in the narratives of nature and existence conveyed through her works.

Mabuchi Akiko About the Artwork

In the vast and profound natural world, I am the only one who can prove my own existence, and within that space, I strongly feel that I am also a part of nature. I want to capture the sensation of my 'being' merging into this powerful yet ephemeral, beautiful yet terrifying nature, and I aim to depict such spaces.

In my previous works, I sought depth within the canvas, being drawn to expressions that immerse blue deeply, utilizing the bleeding of watercolor paints to pursue expansiveness and softness. I have valued creating spaces imbued with subtle life and humidity while keeping specific forms ambiguous.

While my desire to depict such spaces remains unchanged, I have recently become captivated by white. Clouds, snow, mist... white is a color we often see in our daily lives, yet when we try to grasp it, it becomes transparent and loses its shape. Reflecting all colors, white possesses a variety of expressions, resonating with the feelings I experience in nature. I create my works hoping to draw out the air and fragrance that extend beyond the ambiguity of white from the canvas.e paper, and canvas works. Thank you in advance.
