Words for a solo exhibition　　　　　Kakutani Shinpei

How good it would be if I could express on a flat surface the reality that I live and feel. This is my basic idea when I paint. For some reason, I sometimes feel such a reality in a landscape I happen to encounter, and I want to try to paint it. It would be ideal if the painting is as harmonious as Cézanne's landscapes, and if it is a contemporary expression of myself.

I paint in oil on canvas based on drawings. Composition determines everything, so I work as if I am exploring the composition from beginning to end. I want to express depth and light to create a deep space while capturing things in a two-dimensional way.

The works in this exhibition will be centered on Parisian and Tokyo landscapes. I wanted to create a work that would make the viewer feel the history of the city and the things behind the things, by incorporating the light and shadows reflected on the skyscrapers in Tokyo, the light on the architecture in Paris, and the reflection of the light on the water as elements of the composition.
