Drawing on my experience in oil painting up through graduate school, I now create artworks using the technique of yuzen dyeing. My works depict natural landscapes, with the motif of water flowing broadly, changing forms such as clouds, rain, and rivers. I view water as a visualization of the laws of this world. Just as there's the expression "to soak into one's heart," I believe there's a connection between the inner nature of humans and the phenomena generated by water. Thus, I perceive the space I paint as a landscape of the mind.

Primarily, I employ the yuzen technique. I regard the white contour lines created by resist paste not only as a means to prevent dye from spreading but also as lines that define the space with the background positively. By incorporating techniques such as resist dyeing through dripping paste and depicting the characteristics of water such as seeping, splattering, and dripping, I aim to strengthen the connection between my thematic content and the techniques and materials used.

Additionally, using glue derived from rice for resist dyeing and the brush-dyeing technique are unique to Japan's dyeing culture. Combined with the coloring using water and the thematic content of my artwork, they represent my motivation for creating dyed works.

Looking ahead, I aim to further integrate the yuzen technique with painting expression in my artwork and continue exploring unconventional approaches to crafts and sculptural expression. By continually sharing my work, I hope to serve as a catalyst for raising awareness about crafts, including yuzen dyeing, and to demonstrate that they are evolving in line with the times.

Nice to meet you. My name is Yuki Murakami, and I create art using the Yuzen dyeing technique. Thank you for visiting the Dimension Zero Exhibition. Previously, while painting with oils, I vaguely recognized that I was painting due to materials and art history. However, creating art with Yuzen dyeing meant attempting to transcend materials, techniques, and contexts, which required reconciling many aspects. This led me to reconsider what painting is, and the answer I found has become my current style. The inspiration for my work this time comes from the cloudy skies of Kanazawa and features double cherry blossoms as a motif. I focus on the structure and forces of objects, such as perceiving the shape of flowers as swirls, and depict a space that does not exist in reality. I hope you will take your time and enjoy the exhibition.
