Greeting
Hello everyone,
Long time no sees. It is Kim Myeong-sik.
I am willing to participate to participate in the opening of the solo exhibition at Artland Gallery this month and meet everyone for the first time in 5 years, but I am sorry that I could not come to the gallery because of COVID-9.
The works exhibited this time were made after retiring from the university five years ago. Take a look at the exhibition. I hope COVID-9 will disappear soon. See you all again.

Kim Myung-sik Activity History

Kim Myung-sik is an active painter who has had over 70 solo exhibitions in Seoul and New York, as well as Miami, Tokyo, Shanghai, etc. In 2004, he had five exhibitions a year in New York, and in 2010, his traveling exhibition "From Kyushu to Hokkaido" was held in seven different galleries in Japan. The first of these exhibitions was held at Artland Gallery, and this year the gallery will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a commemorative exhibition. The artist has reached the age of 70 years old.

This exhibition will be a retrospective of 50 years of his painting career, focusing on his recent works. East Side Story is a work that was inspired by his first trip to New York in the late 1990s, when he was trying to break free from the mannerism he had fallen into.

One day, he saw a small house in the window of his car on the way to his studio that looked like the faces of the people who lived there. He immediately returned to his studio and proceeded to paint the people in the image as if he were crazy. The result was "East Side Story. I overlapped the houses and the people. He created a new mythology in which white houses are white, black houses are black, and yellow houses are oriental.

There is no single ethnic nation in the world. It is already pluralized and multi-ethnic people are living together. Conflicts and clashes will occur, but they will join forces with each other to develop national strength and create culture. The purpose of having houses the same size and expressed in different colors is to pursue an equal society where there is no racial discrimination. Thus, the ultimate goal is harmony, peace, and hope.

East Side Story, completed with an original composition and excellent sense of color, finally attracted attention in New York, and was invited to the "Three Asian Artists" exhibition at the Liz Gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York in January 2005. His solo exhibitions at Rozhikoska Gallery (New York) in February of the same year, Diaspora Vibe Gallery (Miami) in 2006, PS35 Gallery (Chelsea, New York) in 2007, Lanli Gallery (Shanghai) in 2008, and Mizoe Gallery (Fukuoka and Tokyo) in 2015 have made a strong impression on the art world in Japan and abroad. He has made a strong impression on the art world both in Japan and abroad.

In this exhibition, we can see how East Side Story, which was born in early 2000, has changed over the past 20 years, and the three stages of change from its birth to the present, as follows.

2015 After retirement, settled in a rural village in Yongin, South Korea, where his work changes freely.
