Ms. Shiozaki expresses stories, gods and Buddha, eroticism, flowers, etc. with graceful lines.
She will talk about historical Buddhist paintings and Noh plays, which are the source of her creation, in an easy-to-understand manner.

In Search of the Form of Beauty - What is the Elegant Line - Junko Shiozaki
Since childhood, I have loved beautiful things, such as Buddhist paintings, icons, Butoh, Noh, and literature. I cannot recall the particular reason why I decided to become an artist. The joy of seeing beautiful things was like a natural experience for me, and I may be trying to somehow recreate that memory by painting.
Buddhist paintings of the Heian period (794-1192) drawn with clear ink lines, slender Northern Song dynasty (960-1279) Bodhisattva statues. When I recall the hand movements of a Noh actor, I am always struck by the fact that these paintings were probably born out of a rigorous pursuit and construction of form, rather than an emotional yearning for beauty.
Whether I am depicting something gentle or something extreme, I always want to respect the elegance of the work. I believe that art is something that can be appreciated with a cool eye.
For more than 10 years, I have been using copperplate engraving as a means of expression. I have been working mainly in black and white, using a printmaking technique in which lines are engraved on a copper plate with a needle and treated with chemicals. Japanese painting and drawing are done on Japanese paper with sumi ink, pigments, and dyes. I have been working with Japanese ink, pigments, and dyes on Japanese paper since I wanted to use color and paint again with a brush.
Recently, I have been working more on Japanese painting and drawing. Rather, now that I have begun to use color, I am more often told about the line. I hope to move away from introspective copperplate engraving to a more relaxed and elegant style of expression. Themes change little by little. Stories, Gods and Buddha, Eros, flowers, and so on. I hope that my work will reflect the experiences of my life at any given time.
