as he concludes his year-long stay in Japan and returns to Korea.
We hope this occasion will deepen our friendship and further promote cultural exchange

Artland Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Korean artist Kim Myung-Sik, who has been studying at a Japanese university since April 2010 for one year.
Following last year’s exhibition of oil paintings, this year features a solo exhibition of his watercolor works.
Born in Seoul, Korea in 1950, Kim is currently active in both Seoul and New York. He studied painting at the College of Fine Arts and the Graduate School of Chung-Ang University, and he is now a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dong-A University.

Starting with his oil painting solo exhibition at Artland Gallery in March 2010, Kim went on to present a touring exhibition across Japan — Kobe in April, Fukuoka in May, Osaka in June, Tokyo in July, and Hokkaido in September.
The inspiration for this traveling exhibition began with a large oil painting from his East Side Story series that caught our attention at the Shanghai Art Fair in 2007. A row of narrow houses lined up across the center of the canvas, surrounded by a vast, soft gray space — a unique atmosphere that could only have been created by Kim as a Korean artist. The deep impression left by that painting led us to bring his work to our own gallery, and it is thanks to his sincere personality and prolific artistic activity that this opportunity became a reality.

Below is a statement from the artist himself, written specifically for this exhibition:
“The watercolor paintings featured in this exhibition were created based on sketches I made during my stay in Japan since March of last year. The landscapes span the length of Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south, with a particular focus on the Sanuki region. Most of the works are based on real scenery captured in watercolor, while a few are simplified sketches of places that were less clearly defined. I am truly delighted to be holding another solo exhibition at Artland Gallery after one year. I hope you will enjoy the show.”

To mark the conclusion of Kim Myung-Sik’s one-year stay in Japan and his return home, we will be holding an opening event on the first day of the exhibition. We warmly invite everyone to join us for this occasion.
