Matsushima Chisato Message

Collage is a realm where everything serves as material, a domain of boundless freedom where the coincidental and the inevitable converge. It is a spiritual connection that can only emerge in that instant. The act of cutting out represents the destruction of one world, while pasting together conjures an entirely new, complete world—a form of magic. It is an endless wandering between life and death, where loss becomes the prerequisite for acquisition.

Matsushima Chisato - Biography

Collage artist, proprietor of Salon Café cloud9, and tea blender.

Born in Okayama City in 1969, where she currently resides. Encountered collage during art classes while attending Hosen High School in 1985 and began self-taught production. After graduating from Osaka Kyoiku University in 1992, entered the Yotsuya Simon Doll School.
Held her first solo exhibition at Shibuya Art Space Meiraku in 2001, followed by numerous solo exhibitions at venues including Ginza Span Art Gallery, Shibuya Poster Haris Gallery, Ginza Gallery K, Osaka Oto Gallery, and Kyoto Astarte Bookshop. Participated in many group exhibitions at Shibuya Hikarie, Bunkamura Gallery, and Ginza Gallery West, among others.

Engaged in project mapping with collage works at the Aoyama St. Grace Church. Responsible for book covers published by Tokyo Sogensha, album jackets for musicians such as Teatro Raffinato, and the main visual for the Okayama Riverside Art Festival. Continuously explores the possibilities between the coincidental and the inevitable in collage, always challenging new techniques. She also long focuses on the marriage of tea and art as a longstanding theme.
