Two-Person Exhibition: Kajiura Norio + Kaneshige Makoto
November 8 (Sat) – November 23 (Sun), 2025

Artland Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by two artists, Kajiura Norio and Kaneshige Makoto, who have each built a distinguished record of achievement. Working with different materials and backgrounds, these two artists bring together their unique practices in this special exhibition.
Though their creative paths differ, both artists share a deep commitment to dialogue with materials and to the exploration of inner questions through their work.
This exhibition brings their expressions together in a single space, where we anticipate a new visual and conceptual dialogue will emerge.

■ Kajiura Norio
Since the 1970s, Kajiura has developed his practice after studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, later working extensively in Vienna and throughout Europe as well as in Japan.
His early work was grounded in logical thinking, but more recently he has shifted toward engaging with phenomena that arise through interactions with natural forces.
He is particularly interested in how one responds openly to events that unfold beyond one’s expectations, and seeks to discover new relationships through “dialogue” with materials and environments.

His exploration began with a fundamental inquiry into “existence,” and for many years his work has centered around the concept of ma (間), or in-between space.
Kajiura creates installations and three-dimensional works that emphasize the dynamic interaction between artwork, space, and viewer.
Through his installations, he invites us to reflect on the very nature of existence itself.

■ Kaneshige Makoto
Born into the prestigious Kaneshige family of Bizen pottery, Kaneshige studied under his father, Kaneshige Sōzan, and has spent his life deeply engaged with clay and fire.
His works reflect both the rigorous spirit of Bizen tradition and a supple, perceptive approach that draws out the inherent power of the material.
He notes that after turning sixty, he gradually and unconsciously began to move more freely beyond traditional forms.

His recent works exhibit greater freedom in shape and firing, expressing the individuality of the clay itself.
The resulting forms—combining solidity and lightness, intentionality and chance—speak quietly yet powerfully to the viewer.
