The shimmering layers of luminous memories ripple and intersect, creating expressions of depth and complexity. When creating two-dimensional works, I am always immersed in this subtle fluctuation, continuously undertaking small challenges as I strive to build unbounded layers of light.

■ Artist Profile
Born in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, TANIKAWA Hiroko graduated from the Painting Department of Joshibi University of Art and Design. She has held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Tokyo and other regions of Japan. In recent years, she has been based in Kagawa Prefecture, continuing to engage in exhibitions connected to local communities.
Tanikawa’s practice does not begin with a clearly defined motif or theme. Instead, her paintings evolve from small intuitions and moments of unease, as she attentively responds to what emerges on the surface. Her consistent pursuit of light, air, and visual freedom runs throughout her body of work.

■ Works and Creative Process
In Tanikawa’s paintings, “stirring memories of light” accumulate in multiple layers that intersect and interfere with one another, giving rise to surfaces of complexity and depth. During the creative process, she repeatedly undertakes small challenges within a state of fluctuation, consciously building unconstrained layers of light.
Moments when she pauses—unsure of how to proceed, or when something unfamiliar suddenly appears—are regarded by Tanikawa as central to creation itself. At times, she stops and returns to past works to reassess her direction. In this exhibition, she presents new works that originate from paintings created approximately twelve years ago, advancing into paths that were not pursued at the time.

■ Highlights of the Exhibition
Layered Memories of Light traces the transformations that emerge as accumulated memories of time overlap with present perception. Rather than moving directly toward completion, Tanikawa’s paintings deepen through hesitation and fluctuation, offering viewers moments of subtle discovery and visual openness.
We warmly invite you to experience the quiet yet expansive sensibility found in the paintings of TANIKAWA Hiroko at Artland Gallery.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.

TANIKAWA Hiroko — Text

Layers of light formed from stirring memories overlap and interfere with one another, creating expressions of complexity and depth.
When working on two-dimensional pieces, I continually repeat small experiments within this state of fluctuation, seeking to build unconstrained layers of light.
Moments when I am unsure how to proceed, or when something emerges that feels unlike anything within me, are intriguing; yet at times I pause, sensing something slightly amiss, and find my thoughts momentarily adrift. In such moments, I choose to return to the past and reorganize my inner self.
Drawing upon a painting I made some twelve years ago, I decided to work in a direction I did not pursue at that time.
